Longford has some beautiful free walkways that not only offers physical activity but also an insight into nature and the beauty of the world around us. This is so beneficial for the early years as it encourages them to explore what is around them and take in the fresh air while doing so. It also encourages lots of language development which all the family can be involved in.
Here are a few areas of interest in Co Longford:
- Derrycassin Wood is located on the shores of Lough Gowna in Dring, County Longford. The forest covers an area of 179 acres and consists of three recommended walks, the Nature Trail, the Walled Garden Walk and the Main Avenue Walk. There are a variety of tree species and wild flowers to explore on your walk.
- Edenmore Bog Walk is a looped trail of 5km around the North Longford boglands. This walk consists of bogland habitat and lots of other features.
- Longford Clondra Royal Canal Trackway. The Royal Canal Way is a 90 mile long publicly owned right of way which crosses through counties Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Westmeath before entering County Longford. This trackway provides a beautiful picturesque view from Abbeyshrule to Ballymahon, Kenagh, Kilashee, Clondra (the Richmond Harbour where the canal meets the river Shannon).The 16km section of the Royal Canal which links Longford town to Clondra is a walking and cycling track This off-road trackway is an excellent way to enjoy some of Longfords unspoilt landscape.
- Newcastle Wood is located in Newcastle, Ballymahon, Co.Longford. This forest is a Coillte owned semi-mature mixed woodland of 325 hectares that extends to both sides of the River Inny, a main tributary of the River Shannon. There are 28 kilometres of forest roads, trails and walkways ranging in length from the 400 meter Access for All Walk to the 5km Church Walk. There is also a surfaced walk down along the River Inny and a half mile of wheelchair accessible pathways though the wood, along with picnic and car parking areas.
